Why is it that heroes are always characterized as brave?
In every story and movie I know, the hero (despite whatever shortcoming they have), is always being depicted as courageous. The Gryffindor. The dauntless. The brave warrior. The valiant avengers. Why? Why can’t we be heroes without being brave?
I thought about this from time to time. Why can’t someone be considered a hero simply because he’s smart? Because she’s kind? Because they’re honest? Or simply because they quietly follow the rule and doesn’t hurt anyone?
I’m not brave. I never was.

We are funny creatures. We don’t see the stars as they are, so why do we love them? They are not small gold objects, but endless fire. –Saul Bellow
Why do we love things that we perceive as beautiful in our own understanding?
Why do we hate things that we aren’t familiar with?
Our perception is limited. Our experience is short, and our rationality is bounded. And regardless of how much we try, our wisdom is far from complete.
So why do we dare to pass on judgements, when we only know half of the facts?

So the very kind rustygarnersmith has nominated me for the Liebster Award! Thank you so much for this! It’s really appreciated. 😀 😀 Do check out his blog!
Below are the 10 questions posed by him that I had to answer. Thanks a lot for these awesome questions. It was really fun thinking and answering them. Hope that through these answers, all of you would feel like you know me a little better. 🙂
1) Now that you are here in the magical realm of the blogosphere, what do you want?
From time to time, I wonder: Erase my name. And what is left of me?
And that’s one of the reasons I started this blog. I wish that through my writing, I would be able to paint a little color over someone’s day. And I hope that if I repeat it often enough, there will be something (a thought, a memory, a contemplation on the world, a spark of hope) – which would left a mark, or at least a trace of a purposeful existence.

It seems that every time I turn on the news, another case about corruption emerges. And lately, I’m just wondering about ethics, or lack of thereof.
I live in Indonesia. And while I do love my country, it often leaves me with perplexing feelings, and questions… that I find no answers to.
Indeed, it’s difficult to stay pure and uncorrupted when you are surrounded by corrupt individuals, and that the only obvious way to “survive” is to also engage in such misconduct.

Who are you?
If I were to ask you that question, what would you answer?
Most probably, you would tell me your name, age, career. You might then describe your hobbies, your struggles, and even your goals.
But we often forget the bigger picture: our role in this brotherhood of humanity, who we are in the family of things.
Sometimes, when life gets really busy, I had to stop and remind myself: let’s not get too caught up in your own world. Because regardless of who we are and what our situation seems to be… remember that the earth and the universe are so much bigger than us. What is maturity?
Am I mature?
Am I going to be mature?
Am I maturing?
Or am I just a kid?
Sometimes, I want to be a kid, you see. It’s much easier that way.
And I suppose, over the years… I did develop this persona of a youthful kid, full of harmless fun, joyful tone and colors. In some ways, it makes people less guarded around me, and also makes it easier to talk to them. (And yes, I guess it helps that I look quite young as well).
But the difficult thing is… I also want to be someone… who is… well, mature. Because who wouldn’t?
However, it seems that in general, the majority of people seem to measure maturity simply by how seemingly thoughtful you are. Continue reading What Is Maturity?
